The oldest university in the Netherlands - talking about 'social license': Legend says the university was given as a “reward” to the citizens of Leiden by William of Orange (the 'father' of the whole country), for their heroic resistance during the Siege of Leiden (1574) in the Eighty Years’ War against Spain. The citizens were allowed to choose between a university or exemption from taxes—supposedly, they chose the university!
