Subject areas to watch for 2023

Facebooktwitterlinkedin

Eindhoven, September 2022 – A new report from Studyportals identifies the subject areas where student interest is growing, and where the global supply of programmes is lagging behind demand.

The analysis in this report is based on two key metrics: Demand is expressed as pageviews on Studyportals generated by 52 million prospective students annually, from 110 countries across the world. Supply is expressed as the number of programmes linked to each of the 245 subdisciplines on our portals. Approximately 90% of all English-taught programmes in the world are listed on Studyportals

The report identifies the most promising opportunities for higher education institutions for 2023 by selecting the subject areas with: Significant student interest, double-digit growth and a global undersupply of programmes.

The top ten subject areas identified are:

  • User Experience Design
  • Data Science & Big Data
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Supply Chain Management & Logistics
  • Sustainable Development
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • Business Intelligence & Analytics
  • Food Sciences
  • Biotechnology
  • International Business

The strength of the Studyportals data is that unlike many data resources for Higher Education, we track both the supply and the demand for programmes. This takes the market into account at a more strategic level and can provide more information in predicting future trends. This data provides a strong indication of trends set to impact student enrolments over the next two years.
