International student fee sensitivity: Here's what the data shows about the Big Four

Tuition fees are often seen as a simple affordability issue. The assumption is that as prices go up, student interest goes down.

But Studyportals data suggests the picture is more complex. This chart shows the relationship between annual tuition fees and the proportion of prospective international students who would still consider a Master’s programme in four major destination countries.

The UK continues to attract strong prospective international student interest even as tuition fees rise. Interest remains high until around GBP 15,000 per year before dropping more sharply. This suggests that many students still see strong value in a UK education at higher price points.

The UK also stands out when compared with other major study destinations. In Canada, student interest drops much sooner as fees increase, especially for master’s programmes. The United States sees a more gradual decline, while Australia sits somewhere in between. Among the Big Four destinations, the UK is the strongest at holding student interest as advertised tuition fees rise.

What makes this even more interesting is that the UK is already one of the most expensive destinations for international students.

Although average tuition fees for UK Master’s programmes on Studyportals are GBP 24,000 per year, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of UK master’s programmes take one year to complete, compared to two years in many competing destinations. This means students may be comparing total study costs and time to graduation, not just annual tuition fees.

Taken together, these findings suggest that students are looking at more than price alone. Reputation, programme length, career opportunities and post-study work options may all influence how students judge value.

For universities, this raises an important question: if students are willing to pay more for the right programme, how should institutions approach pricing decisions?

To explore that challenge, Studyportals and Edified are hosting Making Every Enrolment Count, a webinar on how universities can use market intelligence, student behaviour and demand data to make more confident tuition fee and scholarship decisions. The session will explore what different sources of evidence can reveal, where their limits lie, and how universities can combine them to better understand demand, price sensitivity and student choice.
